Have you ever felt completely unqualified for something God was asking you to do? Me too, my friend, me too. Maybe He’s calling you to start a ministry, launch a business, share your testimony, lead a Bible study, foster a child, write a book, speak on a stage, or simply step into a season that feels far bigger than you.
And maybe your first response was the same as mine. “Lord, surely You have the wrong person.”
We look at our weaknesses. We look at our past. We look at our lack of experience. We look at the resources we don’t have, the skills we haven’t developed, and the fears we can’t seem to overcome. Then we assume that God must be looking for someone else.
But throughout Scripture, we see a very different pattern. God rarely calls the most qualified person in the room. Instead, He calls ordinary people and then does something extraordinary through them.
Because God doesn’t always call the equipped. But He always equips the called.
Moses Couldn’t Speak
When God called Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt, Moses immediately began listing reasons why he wasn’t qualified.
“Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent… I am slow of speech and tongue.” – Exodus 4:10
Moses was focused on his limitations. God was focused on His power.
The Lord replied:
“Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” – Exodus 4:11-12
Notice what God didn’t say. He didn’t say, “You’re right, Moses. Let’s wait until you’ve taken some public speaking classes.”
He said, “Go. I’ll help you.” God’s answer to inadequacy wasn’t more preparation. It was His presence.
Gideon Thought He Was Too Small
When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he called him a mighty warrior. The problem? Gideon didn’t see himself that way.
“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” – Judges 6:15
In other words: “I’m from the wrong family, the wrong background, and I’m the wrong person.” And boy does that one hit home for some of us. But God’s response was simple:
“I will be with you.” – Judges 6:16
Not “You can do it because you’re talented.” Not “You can do it because you’re strong.” Not “You can do it because you’re experienced.”
“I will be with you.” And that changes everything.
Jeremiah Thought He Was Too Young
When God called Jeremiah to be a prophet, his response was immediate.
“Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.” – Jeremiah 1:6
God answered:
“Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you.” – Jeremiah 1:7-8
God wasn’t asking Jeremiah to rely on his age, wisdom, or credentials. He was asking Jeremiah to rely on Him.
Peter Was Just a Fisherman
Peter wasn’t a scholar. He wasn’t a priest. He wasn’t trained in theology. He was a fisherman. Yet Jesus chose him to help build the early church.
Years later, people were astonished by Peter’s boldness.
“When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished…” – Acts 4:13
Unschooled. Ordinary. Exactly the type of people God loves to use.
Because when God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things, no one can mistake where the power came from.
The Lie We Believe
One of the enemy’s favorite lies to use with me is, “You need to be more ready before you obey God.”
You need more money. More education. More confidence. More healing. More experience. More certainty. More answers. More time. But if we wait until we feel fully equipped, we may never move.
Faith has never been about having everything figured out. Faith is taking the next step because God said so.
“For we live by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7
The truth is that God often calls us before we feel ready because He wants us to depend on Him. If we could do everything in our own strength, we wouldn’t need Him.
God Provides What the Calling Requires
If God calls you, He will sustain you. If God sends you, He will provide for you. If God assigns you, He will equip you.
Maybe not all at once. Maybe not according to your timeline. But always according to His faithfulness.
“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” – 2 Corinthians 9:8
Not some things. Not most things. All things. At all times. Having all that you need.
That doesn’t mean the journey will be easy. It means God will be faithful.
Stop Looking at What You Lack
If you are like me, you may spend so much time staring at your deficiencies that you stop looking at God’s sufficiency.
While we see our weakness. God sees an opportunity to display His strength.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9
We see impossibility. God sees an opportunity for a miracle.
We see obstacles. God sees a testimony in the making.
The question has never been, “Am I enough?”
The question is, “Is God enough?”
And Scripture answers that with a resounding yes.
Trust the One Who Called You
If God is calling you into something today, stop waiting to become perfect before you obey. Stop waiting to feel fearless. Stop waiting to have every answer. Stop waiting until you can see the entire path.
Instead take it to the Lord. Pray about it. Listen carefully for the Holy Spirit. And then…take the next faithful step.
Because the God who called Noah to build an ark, Moses to confront Pharaoh, David to face Goliath, Esther to save a nation, Peter to preach the Gospel, and Paul to reach the Gentiles is the same God calling people today.
And He has not changed.
“Faithful is He that calleth you, who also will do it.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:24
Not might do it. Not could do it. He will do it.
A Prayer for the Season
Father,
Forgive me for the times I have focused more on my limitations than Your power. Forgive me for believing that I need to have everything figured out before I obey You.
Help me trust that when You call me, You will equip me. While I may feel weak, Lord Your strength is made perfect in my weakness. When I feel afraid, I know God that You are with me. When the enemy lies and tries to tell me that I’m inadequate, remind me that You never asked me to be enough on my own.
Give me the courage to take the next step, even when I cannot see the whole path. Help me trust Your provision, Your timing, Your wisdom, and Your faithfulness.
May my life be a testimony that You are able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.
