When the Climb Hurts: Altitude Sickness on the Narrow Road

This morning in church, we talked about the wide road and the narrow road—the passage where Jesus tells us that the road that leads to destruction is wide and easy, but the road that leads to life is narrow and difficult. As I sat there listening, a thought came to me that I can’t shake.

The narrow road reminds me a lot of climbing a mountain.

And the closer you get to the summit, the harder it gets to breathe.

The Narrow Road Feels Like a Mountain Climb

Anyone who has ever climbed a mountain knows that the journey upward is not easy. The air gets thinner. Your legs burn. Every step feels heavier than the last. The higher you go, the more uncomfortable it becomes.

And sometimes, if you climb too fast or push too hard, you get altitude sickness.

Your body struggles to adjust to the elevation. Your head pounds. Your stomach turns. You feel weak and dizzy, and everything inside you wants to go back down to where breathing felt easy.

But the strange thing about altitude sickness is this:

You only experience it because you’re climbing higher.

No one gets altitude sickness standing in the valley.

And as I sat there in church, I started thinking about how often our spiritual walk with the Lord feels the same way.

Sometimes Growth Feels Like Sickness

There are seasons in our walk with God where we are pushing upward. We’re praying more. We’re seeking Him harder. We’re surrendering things we once held tightly. We’re stepping into places of obedience that stretch us far beyond our comfort zone.

And sometimes, the deeper we go with Him, the more uncomfortable things feel.

Our old habits start to fall away. Our old ways of thinking get challenged. Our pride gets exposed. Our control slips through our fingers.

Spiritually speaking, it can feel like altitude sickness. You might feel disoriented. You might feel tired. You might feel like everything is harder than it used to be.

And in those moments, it can be tempting to wonder:

Why does following God sometimes feel harder than not following Him?

But the truth is, sometimes the discomfort is simply a sign that God is taking you somewhere higher.

The Valley Is Easier — But the View Isn’t the Same

The wide road is comfortable. It’s familiar. It’s crowded. It doesn’t ask much of you. It doesn’t demand surrender. It doesn’t require discipline. It doesn’t challenge you to grow. But it also doesn’t take you anywhere worth going.

The narrow road, on the other hand, requires effort. It requires intentionality. It requires choosing obedience when it would be easier not to.

It’s a climb. And climbs are exhausting. But they also lead to places the valley never could.

The Summit Is Always Worth It

I’ve gotten altitude sickness before when climbing mountains. Your head aches. You feel nauseous. Your body begs you to stop.

But every single time I’ve pushed through and reached the summit, something incredible happens.

You look out. And suddenly the entire world opens up beneath you. The valleys stretch out in every direction. The horizon feels endless. The wind is stronger. The air is sharper. The view is something you could never experience from below.

And in that moment, every miserable step of the climb becomes worth it. The headache didn’t matter. The exhaustion didn’t matter. The struggle didn’t matter.

Because the view from the summit changes everything.

God Leads Us to Higher Ground

Our spiritual walk often follows this same pattern. There are seasons where God calls us higher. Higher in faith. Higher in trust. Higher in surrender. Higher in obedience. And the climb can feel brutal.

You might face trials you didn’t expect. You might wrestle with questions you never thought you’d ask. You might feel stretched in ways that leave you spiritually breathless.

But God never calls us higher just to make us struggle. He calls us higher because the view from where He’s leading us will change us forever.

Every trial shapes us. Every valley strengthens us. Every step upward prepares us for what He has ahead.

The Narrow Road Isn’t Comfortable — It’s Transformational

Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy. In fact, He promised the opposite.

The narrow road is difficult because it leads somewhere sacred. It leads to transformation. It leads to holiness. It leads to deeper intimacy with God.

The wide road may feel easier in the moment, but it keeps you spiritually at sea level.

The narrow road climbs higher and higher until one day you look back and realize:

You’re not the same person who started the journey.

Keep Climbing

If you’re in a season where your walk with God feels heavy, confusing, or exhausting, you might just be experiencing a little spiritual altitude sickness.

You’re adjusting to a new level of trust. A new level of surrender. A new level of faith.

And while the climb might hurt right now, don’t mistake the discomfort for failure. It may simply mean that God is taking you somewhere higher than you’ve ever been before.

So keep climbing. Take the next step of obedience. Say the next prayer. Trust Him with the next piece of your heart.

Because one day you will reach the summit He’s leading you to.

And when you look back over the valleys, the detours, the struggles, and the steep parts of the climb, you’ll realize something incredible:

Every trial, every tear, every step on the narrow road…was worth it for the view from the top.
