When the Gift Feels Heavy: Trusting God with the Blessings That Overwhelm Us

There’s a kind of struggle we don’t talk about enough. Not the obvious kind—the pain, the loss, the waiting.

But the quiet, confusing tension of having something good… and still feeling overwhelmed by it.

The kind of tension that makes you wonder, “God, why does this blessing feel so heavy?”

When a Gift Doesn’t Feel Like Rest

I dream a lot. Not occasionally. Not once in a while. Almost every night. Sometimes multiple dreams in one night. And while that might sound beautiful or even spiritual to some people—it doesn’t always feel that way.

Because many nights, I wake up more tired than when I went to bed. My mind has been running all night. Processing. Seeing. Feeling.

And I’ve found myself in this strange place where I’ve thought: “Lord… I don’t know if I want this.”

And that’s a hard thing to admit. Because there are people who would love to dream. People who pray for encounters, for visions, for something deeper in their spiritual life.

And here I am…feeling overwhelmed by something that could very well be a gift.

Even Good Things Can Feel Heavy

The truth is, not all blessings feel light. Some come with weight. Responsibility. Sensitivity. Awareness. Depth. And Scripture actually prepares us for this tension.

“To whom much is given, much will be required.”
Luke 12:48

Sometimes the very thing God entrusts to you carries a weight you didn’t expect. Not because it’s bad…but because it’s meaningful.

God Gives According to What He Knows

Even when I don’t fully understand why I dream the way I do…God does.

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
Proverbs 2:6

“I will bless you… and you will be a blessing.”
Genesis 12:2

God doesn’t give randomly. He gives intentionally. Which means if He has allowed something in your life—whether it’s a gift, a calling, a sensitivity, or even a burden—He knows exactly why.

Even when you don’t.

It’s Okay to Feel Overwhelmed

There’s this quiet pressure in Christian culture to always feel grateful, always feel strong, always feel excited about what God is doing. But Scripture shows us something different. Even the strongest voices of faith felt overwhelmed.

“My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.”
Matthew 26:38

That was Jesus. Overwhelmed. So if you feel that tension—if something in your life feels heavy, even if it’s good—you are not failing. You are human.

You Can Be Honest with God

One of the most freeing things I’ve learned is this, we don’t have to pretend with God. We don’t have to package your feelings into something polished and spiritual. We can say, “Lord, I know this might be a gift…but it feels like a lot.”

And He can handle that.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7

God isn’t offended by your honesty. He invites it. Not Every Gift Is Meant to Be Carried Alone

Sometimes the overwhelm doesn’t come from the gift itself…but from how we’re carrying it.

Trying to understand it on our own. Trying to control it. Trying to make sense of everything.

But God never asked us to carry His gifts without Him.

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

Rest isn’t found in having less. It’s found in surrendering more.

Maybe the question isn’t, “Do I want this?” Instead, maybe it’s, “God, how do You want me to steward this?”

Because what feels overwhelming now…may have purpose we can’t yet see.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine…”
Ephesians 3:20

Even the things that stretch us are still within His design.

For the One Who Feels This Too

If you’re reading this and thinking, I feel that…but in a different way. Maybe for you it’s not dreams. Maybe it’s:

  • A calling that feels too big
  • A responsibility you didn’t expect
  • A sensitivity that makes life feel heavier
  • A blessing that came with pressure

I want you to know, you’re not alone. And more importantly…God didn’t make a mistake when He chose you.

Lord,

Thank You for being a God who gives with purpose, not by accident. For every gift, every calling, every unseen weight we carry—You see it fully. And You see us fully.

For the moments when blessings feel overwhelming…
When we don’t understand what You’re doing…
When we’re tired, confused, or even hesitant…

Remind us that You are still good. Teach us how to carry what You’ve given us with grace, not striving. Help us to rest in You, not in our understanding.

And give us peace—not because everything is easy…but because You are near.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
